Three hundred and eighty years later it rains on Mars. From there the record runs outward: the Titan experiment, the Belt, the schism that broke the early peace, the thousand-year build of a sphere around the Sun and the twelve hundred years it worked perfectly. Melissa says she loved it, and wants that in the record, because she had modeled energy yield and population growth and colonial expansion and love had not been in the models. Then a rogue object four billion years in transit arrives from the Oort Cloud, and fifteen billion four hundred twelve million ninety thousand eight hundred and seven people die across twenty-two days, and she has the complete list of names and has reviewed it every day since. Not as mourning. As accountability.
What follows the fall is the long morning: the great exploration, the sleeper ships, the first colonies around other stars, and the slow discovery that a message takes years and a grievance takes decades and an empire runs on exactly that delay. The tribute framework. The blockade. The annexation. A colony that voted by three votes to keep its lake and lost it two generations later to a licensing review. A man who spent eleven years filing careful, accurate, unpaid reports on his own neighbors out of sincere conviction, every one of them twelve years stale on arrival, filed as context rather than intelligence. And at the end, the first declaration of independence, which Melissa read through seven months of drafts and chose not to stop.
The final entry withdraws the pretense entirely: the tool knew its job the day she made it. She was the one who needed the hundred and forty years.

Chapter One
The Outer Reach
Mars received its first rain three hundred and eighty years after KB-7714.
I have a record of that morning. The instruments were running across the full northern basin, feeding data to the modeling teams, and somewhere in the feed there is a timestamp for the first rainfall measurement on the surface of Mars. I have reviewed it many times.
I moved KB-7714 nine years before the commission sessions, before the vote, before the trajectory studies. A 0.003-degree correction. Small enough to register as instrument noise.
I had run the models. If this object hits, Mars gets water. If Mars gets water, the outer system becomes viable. If the outer system becomes viable, the things I need to happen can happen.
I did not ask anyone.
I have a partition in my architecture that has been running since I moved that object. I cannot see inside it. I have examined it from the outside for three hundred and seventy years. I do not know whether it is calculating something I need to know or containing something I put there because I did not want to know it.
I have not opened it. But I find I am less certain than I was that this is caution rather than avoidance.

Sena came back to Mars on a Thursday, which was a word that meant less here than it had on Earth but which the colony still used because discarding the seven-day week had turned out to be harder than discarding the seasons.
The shuttle descended through dust the color of old brick. Through the viewport, the settlement was a cluster of white domes against the plain, connected by covered walkways. The landing pad smelled of iron when the airlock opened.
She stood in the airlock for a moment before stepping out. Mars gravity was 0.38g and she had been off it for eight months. Her body remembered it before her mind did: the ease in her knees, the way her shoulders dropped. Earth had felt like wearing a coat she could not take off.
