Recommendations
Books that shaped how I write, think about story, and stay productive.
I don’t recommend books because they’re popular or because someone asked me to. These are the ones I’ve returned to multiple times, lent to other writers, and referenced in my own handbooks.
The Write-Brain Workbook by Bonnie Neubauer turns tedious exercises into play and kills perfectionism in the process. Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro uses an AI narrator to ask what it means to love someone when you were built to serve them. These recommendations span craft guides, literary fiction worth studying, and creative approaches that break the usual molds.
I add new ones when I find books worth your time. Not often, because most writing books repeat the same advice in different fonts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best science fiction books to read?
The best science fiction asks uncomfortable questions about humanity, technology, and the future. Look for books that use speculation to explore ideas you can’t examine any other way. The classics earned their reputation, but hidden gems from lesser-known authors often take bigger risks.
What books should writers read to improve their craft?
Read widely across genres, not just your own. Pay attention to how authors handle pacing, dialogue, and character reveals. Reread books that worked on you and ask why. The best craft education comes from studying what successful authors do on the page, not just what they say in interviews.
How do I find good books to read?
Follow readers whose taste you trust, not algorithms. Bestseller lists reflect marketing budgets, not quality. Personal recommendations from people who read deeply in a genre beat Amazon suggestions every time. Look for books that polarize readers because strong reactions usually mean the author took risks.
What makes a book worth recommending?
It has to stick. A book worth recommending changes how you think, shows you something you hadn’t seen before, or executes craft at a level that teaches you something. Page count and popularity don’t matter. Impact does.
Are these affiliate links?
No. These are genuine recommendations with no financial incentive. I recommend books because they’re worth reading, not because I get paid when you click.
How do I get a book recommended here?
I only recommend books I’ve actually read and genuinely believe are worth your time. There’s no submission process or paid placement. If I read something that belongs on this list, it shows up.
